Past, present and future of the Pontiac Cardinals
The Pontiac Cardinals are a men's Class "A" baseball team in Pontiac, Michigan. Founded in 2002 by Ken Kliewer as Petrusha and Sons, the Cardinals began play under their current name in 2003. As with any expansion team, the early years were not very successful. The 2002 squad finished at 1-17, but steady improvement each of the subsequent seasons has made the Cardinals into a fixture in the Pontiac Class "A" league. The 2008 version ended with a 16-8 league record, their best year to date. Beside playing in the Pontiac league, the Cardinals participate in several non-league events. The annual 4th of July trip to Manistee to play the Saints has become a player favorite. The Lincoln Classic tournament in August is also enjoyable. The Cards finished second in their inaugural appearance this past August. There are also preliminary plans to host a tournament in September, possibly a Labor day weekend event, at Jaycee Park. And, of course, the Cards once again plan to contend for an NABF tourney bid, which would send the team to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to compete for a chance at the NABF World Series in Louisville, Kentucky.
